Similarities Between Fashion Photography And Wedding Photography

Before we discuss the similarities between fashion photography and wedding photography, it is imperative that we develop a good understanding of these two distinct photography fields. Let’s first define what fashion photography and wedding photography really mean:

Fashion Photography

Fashion photography is a genre of photography that is focused on displaying clothes (high-end as well as bridal) and other fashion items typically for advertising and marketing purposes.

Fashion photographers work closely with fashion models, designers, and fashion houses to showcase the latest fashion trends in clothing, accessories, hairstyles, and make-up. Their work is usually presented in fashion catalogs, magazines, and advertising campaigns.

Wedding

Wedding photography is a genre of photography that is focused on capturing photographs of all the activities related to weddings.

Wedding photographers work with their clients (usually brides and grooms) and offer an end-to-end solution to capture every moment before, during, and after the marriage. They capture everything, from spectacular posed shots of the couple and their families to spontaneous candid pictures of the people attending the ceremony and everything in between. Their work is usually presented in the form of digital prints, slide shows, and photo albums.

Now that we know more about the roles of a wedding and a fashion photographer, let’s now discuss the similarities between fashion photography and wedding photography.

The Basic Aim/Objective

Although, a wedding photographer and a fashion photographer work under different circumstances and for different clients, their basic objective/aim is somewhat the same – to show off bridal fashion/trends.

The Basic Equipment

Both, a wedding photographer and a fashion photographer use almost the same basic photography equipment/gadgets, i.e. camera, lights, tripods, software, etc.

The Photo Shoots

Both, a wedding photographer and a fashion photographer can rely on a mixture of in studio and on location shoots to produce the desired results for their clients.

The Working Hours

The working hours for both a wedding photographer and fashion photographer can be very long requiring them to travel and often work in all weather conditions.

While the fashion photographers work with the models to showcase bridal fashion for commercial purposes, the wedding photographers use their photographic expertise and knowledge on couples to make them “models” for a day. The similarities between fashion photography and wedding photography highlighted above indicate that with little effort and knowledge both of them can switch their roles when the need arises.
