wedding planning checklistSo you’re going to get married! Congratulations! But where exactly do you start? We all know that planning a wedding is a huge task, and can be daunting if you don’t know where to start or what to prioritise in the tasks ahead. The best way to go about planning your wedding is to develop and follow a wedding planning checklist outlining every minute detail from the budget through to dealing with vendors and deciding on the finer details.

A wedding planning checklist will help you keep track of what you have to do and what you’ve already done. It will also help you to determine which tasks are more urgent, such as venue and celebrant – both services that book out far in advance – and which tasks can be left to complete a little closer to the big day.

Here is a simple wedding planning checklist prepared with a basic timeline based on a 12-month engagement and planning time.

10-12 Months Before

  • Decide on a timeframe for your wedding
  • Select your bridal party
  • Start the guest list
  • Set your budget
  • Plan the engagement party
  • Research in wedding magazines and on blogs for inspiration
  • Reserve your date and venues
  • Research wedding planner, photographers, entertainment, caterers and florists

08-10 Months Before

  • Finalise the guest list
  • Book your vendor, photographer and videographer
  • Meet and “taste test” with caterers before booking
  • Meet with florists to discuss all the details
  • Purchase your wedding dress
  • Shortlist hotels for your out-of-town guests

06 Months Before

  • Finalise your wedding invitations and look at other required stationery (RSVP cards, place cards, thank you cards)
  • Purchase bridesmaids dresses
  • Book your florist
  • Start planning your honeymoon
  • Organise and book transport for the bridal party and guests (if necessary)
  • Research and select decorations for your wedding venue including marquee, lights, table centrepieces, etc.

02 Months Before

  • Select and order your cake
  • Purchase the rings
  • Purchase your shoes, undergarments and other accessories
  • Find and schedule hair and makeup artists
  • Research and make hotel arrangements for your wedding night and night before if necessary
  • Select and purchase groomsmen outfits
  • Confirm dates for your bachelor and bachelorette celebrations

01 Month Before

  • Confirm all RSVPs
  • Purchase bridesmaids and groomsmen’s gifts
  • Get your marriage license

01 Week before Wedding

  • Reconfirm all times with vendors
  • Delegate small wedding-day tasks to family and friends
  • Send the final guest list to the caterer, wedding planner, and venue
  • Start packing for your honeymoon
  • Hair appointment for colour and trim if necessary

01 Day before Wedding

  • Manicure and pedicure
  • Wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner if desired
  • Finalise honeymoon packing

At a time when the list of tasks and to-dos seem to be never-ending, it is important to stay composed and organised, this is where a wedding planning checklist will come in very handy.
